Malachite Kingfisher Hide : -

  • Location : On northern shore of Langvlei, between Wilderness and Sedgefield, accessed from Lakes Road.
  • Features : Rectangular wooden hide with windows on three side, situated in reedbeds.
  • Highlights : African Rail, Little Bittern, Malachite Kingfisher, African Fish Eagle, Little Rush Warbler, Little Rush Warbler. Perfect photographic opportunity of Reed and White Breasted Cormorant. Plenty water fowl, no waders.
  • Condition : Excellent
  • Managing Authority : Wilderness National Park

Rondevlei Bird Hide : -

  • Location : Northern Shore of Rondevlei, accessed via Wilderness National Park Research Laboratory at Rondevlei.
  • Features : Rectangular wooden hide with windows on three side, situated in reedbeds.
  • Highlights : Seasonal roosting of African Spoonbills, Southern Pochard, Hottentot Teal, Pied and Malachite Kingfisher.
  • Condition : Excellent
  • Managing Authority : Wilderness National Park

Woodville Big Tree : -

  • Location : At Woodville Big Tree, accessed via Hoekville Road.
  • Features : Giant Oteniqua Yellowwood, 3km forest walk loop.
  • Highlights : Yellow Throated Woodland Warbler, Green Wood-Hoopoe, Paradise Flycatcher, Olive Woodpecker, White-starred Robin, African Wood Owl, Narina Trogon, Knysna Turaco, Cape Batis
  • Condition : Good path, slightly muddy in patches after rain.
  • Managing Authority : Wilderness National Park

Rondevlei/ Langvlei Culvert : -

  • Location : Between Rondevlei and Langvlei south of the hamlet Rondevlei, accessed on Lakes road.
  • Features : Reedbeds and channel between with access to open shallow water with waders.
  • Highlights : African Purple Swamphen, Little Grebe, Pearl Throated Swallow, Bokmakierie, Orange Throated Longclaw, African Stonechat, African Fish Eagle, Levaillants Cisticola.

Goukamma River Mouth : -

  • Location : River mouth en route to Buffalo Bay, off the N2
  • Features : Esturine opening into Indian Ocean, sometimes closed by sand bar.
  • Highlights : Juvenile African Black Oystercatchers, Swift Tern, Sandwich Tern, Cape Gull, Kelp Gull, Black Headed Heron, Grey Heron, Pied Avocet.
  • Managing Authority : Goukamma Nature Reserve

Stop # 1 on R339 (refer to map for location)

  • Location - On R339 approximately 1.5km south of turn off to Spitskop view site.
  • Features - pristine Proteacea climax fynbos
  • Highlights - Hotspot for Cape Sugar Bird, Orange Breasted Sunbird, Malachite Sunbird, Victorin's Warbler, Forest Buzzard
  • Access - on side of gravel road

Elephant Walk : -

  • Location : Diepvalle Forest Station, accessed via Uniondale heading out of Knysna
  • Features : King Edward VII big tree, Narina Trogon, Green Wood-hoopoe, Knysna Turaco, Grey Cuckoo Shrike, Black-backed Puffback, Olive Thrush, Cape Batis
  • Condition : Well marked path, muddy in section after rain, ablution facilities.
  • Managing Authority : South African National Parks

Robberg Peninsula :-

  • Location - East of Plettenberg Bay
  • Features - Ancient geology, strandloper middens, seal colony, Cape Gull Colony, Fynbos
  • Highlights - Subantarctic Skua, Orange Breasted Sunbird, Peregrine Falcon, Cape Gull, Swift Terns, White Breasted Cormorants, Cape Cormorant, Breeding Pairs of African Black Oystercatchers, African Dusky Fly Catcher
  • Managing Authority - Cape Nature
  • Facilities - wooden decks and picnic facilities at parking area. a choice of three looped walks. Wear shoes with secure grip and consult tide table for the long loop.

Ebb & Flow Camp Site, Wilderness National Park

  • Location - Off the N2 in Wilderness
  • Features - Afromontane Forest, Wetland River, Tidal Estuary, Forest and wetland walking trails.
  • Highlights - easily record 85 species of birds, specials : Knysna Turaco, Giant Kingfisher, Malachite Kingfisher, Pied Kingfisher, Half Collored Kingfisher, Grey Cuckooshrike, Black Backed Puffback, Narina Trogon, Cape Batis, Yellow Throated Woodland Warbler, Green Wood-Hoopoe, Paradise Flycatcher, Olive Woodpecker, White-starred Robin, Chorister Robin, Cape Robin
  • Managing Authority - SAN Parks

Bitou Pan :

  • Location : on R340 approx 6.2km north of N2
  • Features : Seasonal pan on private land. Viewing possible from Road side
  • Highlights : African Snipe, Blue Crane, African Shelduck, Kittlitz's Plover, Ruff, Redbilled Teal, Black Winged Stilt, Pied Avocet.
  • Managing Authority : Private.
  • Recommendation : Include spotting scope and park on verge of road

Natures Valley :

  • Location : Off N2 after Crags, access only from Craggs side till flood damage repaired.
  • Features : Afromontane Forest, Fynbos, coastal
  • Highlights : African Emerald Cockoo, Grey Cuckooshrike, Cape Batis, Green Woodhoepoe, African Black Oyster Catchers, Spotted Thickknee, Black Bellied Starling, Knysna Woodpecker, Olive Woodpecker, Lemon Dove.
  • Managing authority : National Parks Board

Assegaay Bosch Game Farm :

  • Location : 12 Km from Van Wyks Dorp towards Calitzdorp.
  • Features : Inclusive and self catering accommodation, Karoo Vegitation, Accacia stands, Fynbos and Riverine Forest.
  • Highlights : Spotted Eagle Owl, Karoo Scrub Robin, Layard's Tit Babbler, African Real, Cape Rock Thrush, Three species of mousebirds, Mountain Wheatear, Grey Tit, Lesser Honeyguide, Malachite Sunbird.
  • Suggestion : Plan for short walk before sunset and at Dawn. Best morning viewing next to river 200m before main gate. Access roads are gravel in good condition.

De Zeekoe Guest Lodge:

  • Location : Off R328 12km from Oudtshoorn.
  • Features : Dams, reedbeds, pastures, heronry, canals
  • Highlights : White Throated Swallow, Greater Striped Swallow, Barn Swallow, Rock Martin, Brown Throated Martin, Diedrik Cuckoo, Cape Sparrow, Southern Grey Headed Sparrow, Cape Weaver, Southern Masked Weaver, Southern Red Bishop, Red Billed Quelea, Black Headed Heron, Hammerkop, Bokmakierie, African Hoepoe.
